Washington Black and Rogues In Paradise - Halifax: Safe Harbour, Hard History

Washington Black rises from the fields; Halifax receives him. In between those points runs an old Atlantic thread: timber and fish north-- south, sugar and rum south-- north, and later the footsteps of liberty applicants bound for safety. Halifax's Africville kept the faith-- church bells, kitchen tables, steelpan and jazz-- until policy tore it down; memory keeps it standing still. Out of that larger diaspora emerged Barbadian Canadians whose work opened doors: Austin Clarke on the page, Anne Cools in the chamber, Cameron Bailey in the movie theatre, and professional athletes like Andre De Grasse carrying speed and pride. The story isn't just escape; it's arrival, building, and belonging.

See the clip-- then see the sources, context, and lived history.
