Coldplay a été fondé au milieu des années 90 à Londres, à l'UCL, où Chris Martin a rencontré le guitariste. Ils ont ensuite été rejoints par le bassiste et Will Champion, complétant la formation. Initialement appelé Starfish, le groupe a changé son nom en Coldplay deux ans plus tard. Leur premier enregistrement, Safety, est sorti en 1998, leur permettant d'attirer l'attention sur la scène musicale. Leur premier album, intitulé Parachutes, publié en 2000, a rencontré un succès international, grâce au single "Yellow", qui est devenu un tube mondial.
